BCDK Aikijitsu is a blend of Aikido and Jiu Jitsu. BCDK utilizes both the "hard" style of punches and kicks associated with Karate training, and the "soft" style of throws and redirection of the opponent's force, associated with Aikido.
In BCDK, we realize that there will always be a stronger and faster opponent, especially as we age, so we make use of the knowledge of how an opponent must react to our movement. In that way, we develop techniques that control the opponent, and beat him without relying on strength or speed.
Unlike Karate schools, which use kata as the foundation of training, BCDK uses 18 basic techniques, called "waza." Each of the basic waza is a viable defense against a particular attack, such as a forearm choke, overarm bear hug, head lock, etc., and each basic waza teaches principles of defense. We recognize that each attack is unique, and each attacker is different, which is why it is more important to learn these principles than it is to simply memorize a particular technique.
- Sensei Bob Laronga
Dr. Bob Laronga has been a student of martial arts for most of his life. At the age of twelve, he read a book on combat judo, and was intrigued with the concept of defeating a bigger and stronger opponent by using the opponent’s force against him. At age 13, he enrolled in a Judo class that was held every Saturday morning. At that time, the oriental martial arts were just starting to gain popularity in the United States, and there were not very many schools around. In fact, the Judo school offered Tae-Kwon-Do classes, but students had to be at least 15 years old to take the class. As soon as Bob turned fifteen, he started training in Tae-Kwon-Do.
After high school, Bob stopped training to pursue his college education. Over the next several years, he would find periods of time in which he could resume training. During this period, he studied Tae-Kwon-Do under Master Yeon Hee Park, who was All-Korea-Japan national champion for six years.
Again life demanded a suspension of training, as Bob pursued his Chiropractic education. After setting up his practice, Bob again resumed training, this time studying Shotokan Karate. He enjoyed the training, but always felt as if something was missing. In all the years of on-and-off training, he never learned any techniques to use against a knife or a gun attack. Finally, in 1988, he began training in Hakko-Ryu Jiu Jitsu, under Sensei Al Cornacchio. He found the missing pieces in his martial arts education, and trained with
Sensei Cornacchio until 1994, finally earning the black belt that he felt he could be proud of. He moved to Florida in 1994, and has since been teaching on a part-time basis.
In 2004, with the full endorsement of his instructor, Dr. Laronga founded BCDK Aikijitsu, a blend of the best principles and techniques from all of his training. BCDK stands for Basics, Control, Discipline, and Ki, which are the essential elements of the style, and also represent the four levels of expertise.
